4 Steps to Extend the Lifespan of an Autoclave

CLEANING THE AUTOCLAVE

Autoclaves are widely used in hospitals, clinics, medical centers, and companies. They are employed to sterilize medical instruments, laboratory tools, equipment, microbiological media, pre-treat waste, and the clothing of patients and doctors to neutralize infectious bacteria and microorganisms. Additionally, they are used to create environments for culturing microorganisms.

Therefore, cleaning the autoclave to enhance its longevity is crucial. However, this important task is often neglected by users, leading to a decrease in machine quality, component wear and tear, and higher repair costs. Here’s how users can maintain their autoclave more easily:

Daily Cleaning:

  • Always use distilled or RO water during machine operation.
  • Do not overload the sterilization trays during use.
  • After using the autoclave, at the end of the day, wipe the inside of the chamber and the inside of the autoclave door with a lint-free wet cloth to remove debris, blood, and organic tissue. Ensure the mesh basket is clean after each use.

Weekly Cleaning:

  • Clean the trays and racks with a non-abrasive scrub pad and non-abrasive detergent. Always rinse the tools thoroughly and NEVER USE steel wool, wire brushes, or bleach.

Monthly Cleaning:

  • Unlock the caster wheels and move the autoclave away from its location to clean the floor underneath.
  • Clean the chamber and tubing system with a specified detergent. (Absolutely do not use bleach)
  • Inspect the cord and plug, as overheating and overuse can pose fire hazards. If necessary, the power cord should be replaced.

Annual Cleaning:

  • Should only be performed by a professional.
  • Disassemble and clean the filter if applicable.
  • Check the electrical system, fuses, and connectors.
  • Inspect the tubing system and all connections.
  • Clean the solenoid valve.
  • Check the indicator lights and all their functional cycles.
  • Inspect the overheating protection switch.
  • Inspect the door gasket. Replace this gasket annually.
